Winona Ryder Professionally Winona Ryder, was born in Winona Minnesota. Her name was chosen by her parents after the town where she was raised. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother are both authors and editors. Ryder's father is from the Jewish family Ryder feels she's Jewish. She has two younger half-siblings, Jubal and Sunyata. In the year Ryder was only seven her family relocated from Mendocino County, California. Mendocino County California. They resided in an area without electricity. The books on television were Ryder's only distraction for her time, and she became an avid reader. Ryder, then 12, enrolled at the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in 1983. In 1986 she landed her first role on the big screen in the movie Lucas at just 15 years old. Ryder suffered from bullying in high school. Ryder had hoped that her profession acting as a professional would make a difference. It didn't work out. However, she remained committed to her goals. In 1988, she received her biggest break with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder kept playing successful roles in a variety of films. Two Academy Awards were nominated, one of which was for The Age of Innocence (1996).
